Living in Austin

Austin welcomes people from all walks of life - families who have lived here for generations, residents who have a second home here, young families, retired people, French-and English alike, who share the same vision of community and quality of life.

The population is around 3500 people, with some 1200 households, about equally divided between permanent and seasonal residents.

In the heart of the village is the general store, with gas station and SAQ outlet; a post office and a small restaurant.

Churches
Although Austin had several churches in the past (Anglican, Methodist and Catholic), today there is only the Catholic church Saint-Augustin-de Cantorbery where a non-resident priest celebrates mass every Sunday and offers the other sacraments of the Church. Catholics can also attend services at the Abbaye Saint-Benoit-du-Lac. There are church of other religious denominations nearby, in Magog, Bolton Centre and in South Bolton.

Education
What used to be called the little village school is today the home of the town hall. French-speaking students now attend school in Eastman (Val-de-Grâce), about 20 km away; then the secondary school in Magog (La Ruche), about 20 km away. English-speaking students attend Princess Elizabeth Elementary School in Magog, then secondary school at Alexander Galt in Lennoxville (60 km away). The nearest CEGEPs and universities are in Sherbrooke and Lennoxville.

Jobs
Many Austin residents are self-employed as farmers, providers of services or professionals and many others work in the neighbouring towns. Most local jobs are related to seasonal-recreational activities.

Community
Austin is proud of the many volunteer groups and associations that contribute to betterment of and sense of community in the municipality.
