A village called Peasley's Corner, later renamed Austin in honour of the first settler to make his home by Lake Memphremagog, came into being at the crossroads. Nicholas Austin, Quaker and Loyalist, settled here in 1793. Since then pioneers from many different backgrounds have come to make their homes here.

Nestled in the heart of a vast tourist region, the Municipality of Austin is situated a few steps from the Abbaye Saint-Benoît-du-Lac, to which it owes in some measure its renown. This best known and certainly most photographed symbolic landscape feature of the region is in Austin, part of our landscape, which we have used for our website.

Bordered on the east by majestic Lake Memphremagog, Austin sparkles with other, smaller lakes, including Orford Lake which draws divers, and many ecological lakes which have attracted cottagers and seasonal-recreational visitors. A few kilometres away are Orford and Owl's Head Mountains where downhill skiers, hikers and golfers practice their favourite sports.

In the village are several inns and "bed and breakfast" establishments (visit them by clicking on the Accommodations heading) that welcome tourists who like to get away from the beaten path.
