Austin has taken up the promotion of the recovery and recycling of waste materials with determination. The selective collection is now well-established. Most households have adopted this new environmentally aware practice. Soon the municipality will launch a campaign to encourage people to compost their organic wastes. This step will make it possible to considerably reduce the volume of materials going to landfill, and for the municipality to reach the objectives set by the government’s policy.
From the municipal administration’s point of view, implementing these measures will involve major changes in this service. Negotiations are underway for a long-term agreement with the sorting centre in the Sherbrooke region. The treatment of recyclable materials could be handled responsibly, and costs controlled because this sorting centre is governed by an intermunicipal board of which Austin envisages being a member.
Landfill remains a major concern of Council, given the transformation of this industry in Quebec and the Estrie region. It is important for Austin to be sure of having guaranteed, long-term access, at a reasonable cost, to a disposal site for wastes that cannot be recovered, recycled or transformed.
