The Municipality is governed by the Municipal Code of Québec, amongst others, that contains a number of requirements related to information for citizens, notably with regard to holding meetings of the council, the call for tenders and contracts. Also, on November  6, 1979, the Quebec government adopted Bill 125, to govern  land use planning and development, which decreed the formation of  regional county municipalities (MRC). The MRCs are made up of all the municipalities within their boundaries. On September 23, 1981 the Quebec government officially created the  MRC de Memphrémagog, which includes Austin and 16 other municipalities.
