Master composters
Thirteen volunteers followed a series of workshops offering training about composting, led by Ms Edith Smeesters, biologist and speaker. The training was intended to prepare specialists in household composting – master composters – who will be able to share their knowledge with the community as volunteers. These master composters are there to give you sound advice and answer your questions, such as:
- What materials can be composted and which ones cannot?
- How often should the contents of the compost pile be turned?
- Which are the best tools to use?
- Is one model of composter better than another?
- Can I continue to make compost in the winter?

Composting, something you can do for the environment
Composting is a simple and ecological way of obtaining an excellent soil conditioner for gardens and flower beds – and it costs nothing! Composting is based on the
decomposition of organic materials into something that looks like earth, called humus or compost. This natural process is carried out by micro-organisms such as bacteria and moulds that transform residues into a nutritive product for the soil.

Vermicomposting (Worm composting)
There are various ways of composting. One is with worms (vermicomposting), by which kitchen and garden wastes are decomposed using special earthworms. The municipality has acquired a vermicomposting bin as a demonstration project. For more information on this subject, contact our environment specialist or Ms Hélène Beaumont, at www.versunavenirvert.com.
